Call for Submissions to Jasūr 5.1 (Fall 2022)

The editorial board of Jasur Magazine calls for submissions to Jasur 5.1, the Fall 2022 installment of Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill’s student-run journal for critical scholarship on the Middle East and North Africa. Submissions for the Fall 2022 issue will be accepted until Sunday, November 6, at which point the editorial board will be in contact with selected authors.
Submissions to Jasur are open to all current students, both graduate and undergraduate, as well as to work written during recent graduates’ student careers. This Fall’s issue of Jasur is thematically open, and we encourage students to submit academic work on any subject for consideration. This Fall, we are also welcoming submissions of shorter-form essays and creative work. More specific guidelines can be found below.
Submission Guidelines
Long-form, research essay submissions should be roughly between 15 and 40 double-spaced pages, and can be written in English, Arabic, Turkish, or Persian. If more clarity is needed on types of suitable work, past issues of Jasur can be found here. We are especially excited about publishing work that contains original research, such as abridged versions of senior undergraduate/master’s thesis, and/or work that brings fresh perspective to existing debates. Please note, if selected for publication, authors of pieces that exceed 40 double-spaced pages will need to abridge their pieces before we can begin the editing process.
Submissions of short-form work can be divided in to two categories. The first is shorter essays that offer commentary on current events, political and/or cultural discourse, and any other form of critical analysis. The second is creative work, which might include poetry, short fiction, and/or creative non-fiction. Both should be roughly 500-1200 words. We also welcome submissions of visual art–– every semester, we feature one artist’s work on the journal’s cover.
Chicago-style with footnotes or endnotes is preferred for citations.
Submissions should be sent as a Google Doc with permissions on to jasurmagazine@gmail.com or submitted through our website’s submissions tab by October 23rd, 2022.

تدعو هيئة تحرير مجلة جسور طلاب البكالوريوس والماجستير إلى التقدم ومساهماتهم البحثية لعدد 5.1، وموضوع التقدم مفتوح على أن يكون مرتبط باهتمامات جسور البحثية. جسور هي مجلة للأبحاث النقدية والكتابة عن مناطق الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا، معروفة على نطاق واسع، ويحررها طلاب في جامعة دوك وجامعة نورث كارولاينا - تشابل هيل، جامعة دوك، وجامعة نورث كارولاينا-جرينزبورو. سيتم قبول طلبات عدد خريف 2022 حتى يوم الأحد، 6 نوفمبر، وعندها ستتواصل هيئة التحرير مع الكتاب الذي يقع عليهم الاختيار. ببساطة، نحن في جسور نبحث عن عمل يأخذ منهجاً مادياً لتحليل أي قضية معاصرة في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا.
إرشادات التقدم
نقبل المساهمات من مقالات أكاديمية طويلة، بالإضافة إلى مقترحات العمل القصيرة. نقصد بالمقالات الأكاديمية الأعمال التي تتراوح بين 15 - 40 صفحة. وتحتوي على بحوث أولية و\أو ثانوية. ويسعدنا قبول مساهمات أطول، ولا سيما أطروحات أو أوراق أخرى تحتوي على بحوث أصيلة، ولكن إذا تم قبول مقالات أطول من 40 صفحة، فمن المتوقع أن يقوم المؤلفون باختصارها قبل بداية عملية تحريرنا.
المساهمات القصيرة والطويلة يمكن أن تقدم شروحات سياسية، نقداُ لسياسات الدولة أو\والمؤسسات، وتدرس، على وجه التعميم، الأحداث الحالية من مناظير متعددة و متنوعة. وبالإضافة إلي الأعمال الأكاديمية و التحليلية. في هذا الفصل يسعدنا قبول المساهمات الإبداعية، التي تشمل الشعر و الأعمال الإبداعية الخيالية القصيرة و الغير خيالية.
